Richards clapped his hands. “Okay. We’re in business. Janus has the spike in place, and the flitter is interacting with the software. Shutdown commencing.”

“Nice.” Garza kept his arms folded. He tapped his index finger to his lips. “Time frame?”

“Twenty-eight seconds. Plenty of time for our algorithm to override the spike. Its focus is on the programming that oversees the metals market prices. Whatever defenses it has in place are fairly standard, at least based on what we know about the components retrieved from the lab on Kishor.”

Gina was glad they knew what was going on, because she was too busy fuming about the morning’s fiasco. Dwyer and Sakuri were off mending Novabird’s pitted fuselage, making use of a hidden airfield kilometers away from the city. That left Sev to sulk in a corner of the hotel’s common room, gingerly testing the bandages wrapped around his rib cage. He had a few bloody scratches on his shirtless chest but, other than that, seemed no worse for wear.

“It was an assassin bot, Sev.” Gina shook her head. “Have you ever heard of someone taking out those models single-handedly?”

“No,” he muttered.

“Then cheer up. You’re not dead.”

“Yet.”

Richards made a sound like he’d choked. His face went pale. “No. That’s—hang on.” He slid lines of code around his screen and tapped commands into the console at a furious pace, each one followed by a muttered curse.

“What is? What’s happened?” Garza demanded.

“The spike—it fried our flitter before it could finish the transfer.” Richards clutched his forehead. “I can’t—we’re talking about a kill program designed to dismantle our algorithm the second it makes inroads.”

“Is it really that advanced?” Gina joined them, frowning. “I thought you tech types could counter those kinds of threats.”

“We can because they’re usually generalized.” Richards looked equal parts astounded and furious. “This—it isn’t fair. It’s not a basic defense. It’s not even second tier. Whoever designed this kill program knew how to disable ours and was familiar with the basic protocols I’d use to create the kind of algorithm Flitter Six-Two-Eight-Seven-Bravo carried.”

“Damn,” Sev murmured.

“Yes, even I got that,” Gina replied. “You’ve got a bigger problem than market sabotage.”

“Bigger, no, but more disturbing.” Garza glared at the readouts on Richards’s screen. “We have a leak inside Intelligence.”
